Call of Brindelier is Free Today!

Call of Brindelier is free today only: July 5, 2018

“There is a place of legend and lore, a tale passed from mother to son and father to daughter and written here for the eyes of innocents. Once carried in whispers on the wind, it speaks of a city like no other. It is the tale of Brindelier, a kingdom obscured by mist and cloud. A palace out of reach, golden and bright. A land of promise and peace, where no wish goes ignored, and no desire is unfulfilled.”

Are you following me on Facebook yet? This month I’m participating in #WIPJoy, a sharing hashtag which gives authors prompts to share interesting things about their current works in progress. I’m having fun sharing all kinds of things about Mya and her story that I’m working on for the first prequel to the Keepers of the Wellsprings series! You should check it out, and while you’re at it, follow me!

Here’s just a small sample of what you’ll find over there:
Day 5: 3 side characters you love:
Cort, Paewyn, Pa

Like all of my books, this one is full of all sorts of characters. Characters always drive my stories, and I love making up different people with elaborate back stories and interesting personalities. My current favorites at this point in the book are (No spoilers, I promise!):

Cort Daborr, a “privateer” (uh, PIRATE!) who befriends Mya aboard the Mark, a privateer’s ship en route from Elespen to Cerion. Cort is a bos’n with a soft spot for young Mya, and watches over her like a big brother aboard the ship. He’s a swashbuckler as well, and hopes to show off his skills at the trials on Cerion Day.

Paewyn (just Paewyn) is Mya’s pa’s current love interest (of which there have been countless others). She’s currently Mya’s guardian while her pa is off doing who-knows-what. A shady character with very few scruples, Paewyn’s main motivations seem to include money, liquor, and getting Mya into trouble.

Pa: Mya’s father is a fun character to write, because 14 chapters into the story, there hasn’t been a single scene with him in it! She writes about him in her journal and talks about him to others, and I feel like at this point in the book he’s a pretty well-established character,  but he’s an elusive fellow. He’s a charlatan and a trickster, and often makes promises he doesn’t intend to keep. Mya loves him dearly, but a part of her really resents him, too. He’s been a great tool to show her personality.

Less Than a Week to Go!

EVERYONE! I am so excited for the week ahead. Call of Hywilkin has its official release this Friday, March 3. To celebrate, I’ll be offering Call of Kythshire, Call of Sunteri, and Call of Brindelier for free for that one day only!

Are you ready to explore Hywilkin? Here’s a desktop wallpaper I made with some of my favorite illustrations from the book. Feel free to download it and use it (personal use only, please)!

My website is all ready to go, with a face lift to match the color scheme of the new book. I invite you to read an excerpt from the book (spoiler-free) and check out the illustration gallery (not so spoiler-free).

This week also happens to be #RobotPartyWeek. I’m told it has nothing to do with robots or parties, but anyone following the hashtag on Twitter will find free books from fantastic indie authors! Check it out this week, the week of Feb 26-March 4.

Speaking of #RobotPartyWeek, my friend and fellow indie Christina McMullen has a few things planned over on her Vampires & Robots blog. Says she: “All week long, I’m featuring new releases from a variety of sci-fi and fantasy authors. We’ve got flying cars, snarky adventure seekers, pantsless elves, and an outspoken fairy. Plus, alien robots from outer space run amok and only the book world can save us!”

I’m also working on a fun interview between Flitt and a character created by author Ember Winters which she’ll be posting this Friday, and I’ll have a fun Realm Explorers by Annie Douglass Lima interview going up March 6 telling all about the Known Lands.

With all that to look forward to, it’s going to be a great week! What do you have going on? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

Everything but Writing

Everything but Writing

I spent my morning doing everything but writing. I have no excuse, but I do have a pretty graphic with an excerpt from Call of Kythshire to show for it, so I’m going to just leave that right here:

In this excerpt, Princess Margary is reading to her from an old storybook. This scene is the catalyst for the climax of the book. This is the point where my readers have told me they couldn’t put it down. I hope you liked it. If you did, you can Click here to buy a copy for your Kindle. Thanks for reading! ❤

All the Little Things

Getting ready to launch book three, which is set to release this Friday, June 10, I’m spending this week fixing up all of the little things that have been shelved in favor of writing, illustrating, and editing. One of those things was my website, which was in dire need of an update.

Now, without further ado, I’m excited to share the newly updated missysheldrake.com with you! There, you can browse the illustration galleries for Call of Kythshire and Call of Sunteri, read excerpts from all three books, tiptoe through my fairy art doll gallery, download my new Marketing Kit, and even send me a message! I hope you do. I love hearing feedback. So, go on over and take a peek!

Azaeli Hammerfel

Azaeli Hammerfel

imageAzaeli, or Azi, is the main character of the Keepers of the Wellsprings series.  She is the only main character in Call of Kythshire, but she shares the role with Tib in Call of Sunteri and the upcoming third book in the series: Call of Brindelier.

Azi grew up in the guild hall of his Majesty’s Elite. Her parents are Knights. Her caretaker is the guild’s cook, Mouli. Her best friend is Rian, the son of the guild leader, who is also her next door neighbor. Because she’s a girl and most of those she trained with were boys, Azi never had many friends growing up. Her parents and her guild have provided her with a sense of purpose she has never doubted.

She is loyal to King and country, and her dream is to become a Knight like her parents so she can one day stand beside them to protect the peace that Cerion is so well known for.

In Book 3, Call of Brindelier, Azaeli has come into her own.  She’s now a celebrated Knight and a full-fledged member of the Elite, but her allegiance is torn between her beloved country and that of Kythshire.  Her alliance with the fairies there has placed her in a precarious position, and the magic she has earned by helping them is a source of suspicion in Cerion.

I had so much fun creating Azi’s guild hall that I decided to do a close up view of her house, too. This house is where Azi grew up, and it’s a small part of the larger guild complex.  She spends much of her time here in the first book of the Keepers of the Wellsprings series: Call of Kythshire.

Many scenes have played out within these walls.  I even added Flit’s pitcher to the drawing. Do you see it?

How to Make OOAK Fairy Wings

How to Make OOAK Fairy Wings

OOAK means One of a Kind. These fairy art dolls are usually hand-sculpted from clay. Fairy art dolls are a lot of fun to make, and I especially love making the wings.

For my first blog entry I thought it would be fun to start with a bang and share how to make OOAK fairy wings.

I started making fairy wings over 10 years ago, and there was a lot of trial and error involved. I’ve learned make different wing techniques along the way, but this one is my favorite. You can see how many different designs you can come up with here in my Fairy Gallery: http://missysheldrake.com/fairies/

So, without further delay, here is my Fairy Art Doll Wing Tutorial! I hope you enjoy it! If you have any questions, please feel free to post them in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them.
